About us

Progressive City: Radical Alternatives is an online publication dedicated to ideas and practices that advance racial, economic, and social justice in cities. We feature stories on inclusive urban planning practices, grassroots organizing, and civic action. Our contributors and readers are activists, reporters, practitioners, academics, and community members.

Progressive City: Radical Alternatives grew out of Progressive Planning Magazine, a quarterly print publication of the Planners Network. We:

  • Prioritize community-based voices and feature contributors with a range of professional and educational backgrounds.
  • Publish clear and jargon-free writing that engages a broad audience, while recognizing the complexity of urban life and urban struggles.
  • Create a space for a range of media forms, including video, photography, and podcasts.

Editorial collective

Managing Editorial Collective: Tom Angotti, Allison Lirish Dean, Norma Rantisi, Lacey Sigmon, Jacob Ryan, Efadul Huq, Sunjay Mathuria

Advisory Board: Maya Amichai, Deshonay Dozier, Victoria Kaplan, Marie Kennedy, Annette Koh, Jeffrey Lowe, Oksana Mironova, Sylvia Morse

A message from our founding editor

As founding editor of Progressive Planning Magazine, I am delighted that a new group of talented people has put together Progressive City: Radical Alternatives, an online publication that follows and amplifies the principles of social justice in the spirit of the lapsed magazine. It is exciting to be part of this project and I look forward to continue contributing to future issues.

— Tom Angotti, founding editor, Progressive Planning Magazine
